Shaw Park Community Meeting -
Potential for an Off Leash Dog Area
Date: Monday, August 10, 2015
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Shaw Park Parking lot / picnic area
Purpose of the Meeting
Regional Parks would like to collect input from park neighbors and the Kenwood community regarding the potential for permitting off leash dogs at Shaw Park.
The presentation by Regional Parks will include:
- Brief history of Shaw Park
- Explanation of the process
- Considerations and concerns
- Public comments and Q & A
- Next Steps
Sonoma County Regional Parks has received numerous requests to consider providing some use of Shaw Park for off leash dogs. This 5 acre neighborhood park features a soccer field, picnic area and playground. For many years the Kenwood Soccer Association utilized this location for youth soccer programs and assisted Regional Parks with field maintenance during the soccer season. Kenwood Soccer Association no longer utilizes Shaw Park for practices or games and presently there are no other organized soccer leagues reserving the field. The field is occasionally used by non league groups and individuals for informal games and practice.
"Off leash dog areas" are sites that have a shared use with sports or other recreational activities. Conversely, a dog park is exclusively for dog use.
Off leash dog areas typically include:
- Posted hours when dogs are permitted off leash
- Clear boundaries (that may or may not be fenced)
- Minimal infrastructure (dog bag dispenser, trash cans)
- Compatibility with other park uses (athletic field, playground, picnic area)
- Posted rules and regulations
How to Participate
Regional Parks has developed a brief survey and is requesting feedback from the Kenwood community to gauge support for this project, preferences on how it would be implemented and understand any concerns residents may have. This survey has been mailed to residents within ¼ mile of the park and will be available at the meeting on August 10
