Freedom Trax

Freedom Trax is a motorized track attachment that connects to a manual wheelchair and helps improve access across uneven outdoor surfaces. We offer free Freedom Trax reservations as part of our work to make parks more accessible for all.

Freedom Trax is currently being piloted at Doran Regional Park on weekends only, by appointment. Visitors younger than 18 may use the Freedom Trax with a reservation, but a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the required waiver. Check the park webpage for reservation process, address and park information.

Freedom Trax may not work with every wheelchair or for every visitor. Before using it, visitors must be able to safely operate the joystick, understand the instructions and confirm that their manual wheelchair is compatible with the equipment. Visitors are responsible for deciding whether Freedom Trax is right for their needs, abilities and personal equipment.

Reservations

The Freedom Trax motorized wheelchair attachment is available at Doran Regional Park on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) only by appointment. To reserve, please call the Regional Parks main office at (707) 565-2041 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or email Parks@SonomaCounty.gov.

Staff assistance

For safety and liability reasons, Regional Parks staff cannot help transfer visitors or operate the device. Visitors may bring family members, caregivers or companions to help with setup and use.

Set up instructions

These instructions are a general overview. They do not replace the manufacturer’s manual, waiver requirements or site-specific instructions at the park. 

1. Adjust the width 
   Remove the locking pins on one side at a time. Adjust the tracks to fit your wheelchair, then reinsert and secure all locking pins. Make sure the tracks are stable before continuing.
2. Mount your wheelchair 
   Lower the ramps to the ground and engage the Freedom Trax parking brake. Roll your wheelchair onto the unit from the rear, then activate your wheelchair’s parking brake. Secure the rear wheels with the harness straps, using the loop one-third from the top. Attach the front straps to the wheelchair frame and tighten them. Lift and secure the ramps with the bungee cord. 
   Before operating the device, double-check that all straps are tight and that the wheelchair is centered and secure.
3. Set up the controller 
   Mount the joystick controller to your wheelchair using the clamp. Secure the joystick cable away from the tracks, then plug the controller into the Freedom Trax and ensure a firm connection.
4. Operation 
   Power on the joystick controller. The joystick unit controls forward and backward movement, turning and speed and also displays your battery indicators.
5. Know before you go 
   Freedom Trax may not be used in water, over curbs higher than 4 inches or on slopes steeper than 7 degrees. Conditions will vary by park, and Freedom Trax use may change based on weather or seasonal trail conditions. Use it only in approved areas and follow all site-specific instructions. Freedom Trax weight capacity is 250 pounds, not including wheelchair.
