Regional Parks Website Wins Design Award

August 16, 2013 in News

Sonoma County Regional Parks’ newly designed website, SonomaCountyParks.org, has been named “Best in Class” in the 2013 Interactive Media Awards, an industry competition open to web designers from around the world. The awards recognize websites in various categories, and Regional Parks’ site is one of 11 receiving the highest honor in the government category. The designation represents the best in planning, execution and overall professionalism. To win at this level, the site had to pass a comprehensive evaluation based on design, content, functionality, usability and browser compatibility – an achievement only a fraction of competing sites earn each year.

The award goes to the County of Sonoma and White Horse Productions of Portland, Ore., which contracted with the county to build the site. Work began last summer with support from the Board of Supervisors. Staff from the county’s Information Systems Department and Regional Parks managed the project, working closely with White Horse to develop a more vibrant, interactive resource for enjoying Sonoma County’s parks and trails. The site launched in March with customizable maps, photo slideshows, streamlined navigation, expanded social media links, park weather forecasts, searchable activity lists and other new features. The site averages 40,000 hits a month and is the most visited site among Sonoma County’s government departments. Information Systems and White Horse continue to collaborate on the redesign of other county sites.

The Interactive Media Awards were established by the Interactive Media Council, a nonprofit organization of leading web designers, developers, programmers, advertisers and related professionals working to elevate the standards of excellence on the Internet.
