New paved path adds recreation options at Tom Schopflin Fields

October 10, 2024

SANTA ROSA, CA – Sonoma County Regional Parks has completed construction on a new paved trail at Tom Schopflin Fields, enhancing the park experience for visitors and residents of the Mark West-Larkfield area in northern Santa Rosa. The half-mile pathway around the park’s perimeter offers a safe, accessible route for walking, running, biking and other outdoor activities, expanding recreation options at the 21-acre park. The paved path also provides a warm-up space sports teams using the fields and an additional recreational area for spectators. It also connects to existing community recreation paths to create more routes for park visitors from surrounding neighborhoods.

Tom Schopflin Fields, located on Old Redwood Highway, is already a hub for youth sports, featuring two all-weather soccer fields and a baseball field. The completion of the perimeter path aligns with the park’s Master Plan and responds directly to community feedback, addressing the need for enhanced recreational amenities. The path, designed with all ages and abilities in mind, begins near newly expanded ADA parking spots on the south side of the park, winds along seasonal wetlands and the perimeter of the park, and links to a bridge and sidewalk leading into neighborhoods to the north.

Funding for the $224,000 project was sourced from Parks For All –  Measure M ($300,000) and Mark West area park mitigation fees ($76,000).

Tom Schopflin Fields was acquired by Sonoma County Ag + Open Space and transferred to Regional Parks in 1999 to support youth sports. The park continues to evolve with plans for future improvements including a sports field and parking spots.

Tom Schopflin Fields is located at 4351 Old Redwood Hwy. For more information, visit parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/find-a-park/tom-schopflin-fields.
