Regional Parks seeks input on future trails and more at Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Preserve

Master planning will guide West County park and preserve

March 13, 2025

MONTE RIO, CA - Sonoma County Regional Parks is asking the public to complete an online survey to help shape the future of Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve. The 515-acre park was acquired in 2020 and provides several miles of trails through redwood and Douglas fir forests and along Dutch Bill Creek. The department is developing a master plan to guide the creation of future trails, picnic spaces, recreational and educational uses and natural resource stewardship. The survey is available until April 11 at SoCoParks.org/MRR-Plan in English and Spanish.

“We are excited to invite the community to share their voices and vision for the future of Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve," said Board of Supervisors Chair Lynda Hopkins, whose 5th District includes Monte Rio. "This park is a treasure for our region, and as we look ahead to its stewardship, it is essential we gather input from residents. Your feedback will play a critical role in shaping the decisions that impact this incredible space for generations to come.”

Monte Rio Redwoods is the first regional park in the area, providing hiking, biking and other recreation opportunities for Monte Rio and nearby communities of Camp Meeker, Tyrone and Occidental. The park contains diverse ecosystems, rare plant species, second- and third-growth redwood forests and areas along Dutch Bill Creek, a Russian River tributary supporting steelhead trout and coho salmon.

Planning for the park’s future has been ongoing, with guided public Park Preview Days co-hosted by Regional Parks and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space. Public input from the survey will inform a draft master plan, a process which typically takes 12 to 18 months and involves extensive environmental review. The draft plan will be available for public review before going to the Board of Supervisors for consideration in winter 2026.

Hard copies of the survey and documents can be requested from Park Planner Karen Davis-Brown at Karen.Davis-Brown@sonoma-county.org or 707-565-1359.

Regional Parks collaborated with local partners to acquire the property. Funding included $2.1 million from Ag + Open Space; $954,028 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund; $500,000 from the California Coastal Conservancy; $300,000 in local Parks for All – Measure M parks sales tax funds; and $45,972 in park mitigation fees.

Please note: The current master planning for Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve does not include an adjacent 1,517 acres that Save the Redwoods League plans to purchase and transfer to Regional Parks in summer 2025. Similar master planning and public input for that property will happen at a later date.
